QOL = Quality Of Life
It translates literally to “quality of living” and “quality of life.”
It expresses the level of fulfillment and satisfaction in all aspects of physical, mental, social, and daily life.
For humans, it can be summarized as:
– A life where the individual can feel content
– A life with accompanying satisfaction
– A life where happiness can be obtained
In the case of pets, it might be helpful to consider the “5 Freedoms,” a basic concept of animal welfare.
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort and pain
- Freedom from injury and disease
- Freedom from fear and distress
- Freedom to express normal behavior
In actively treating and managing the illness, these 5 freedoms can sometimes be deprived.
However, the concept of QOL aims for dogs to live like dogs and cats to live like cats, even while battling their diseases.
- ・How is their energy and appetite?
- ・Are they spending their days happily?
- ・Are they free from pain?
It is very important to monitor these aspects.
Among the various treatment methods proposed, it’s crucial to consider not only the treatment efficacy but also whether it maintains QOL.
To avoid treatment that focuses too narrowly on one aspect (‘Can’t see the forest for the trees’), please incorporate the concept of QOL.
