What is a Cutaneous Histiocytoma in Dogs?

Characteristics of Cutaneous Histiocytoma

Cutaneous histiocytoma is a tumor that is only seen in dogs. It is characterized by its occurrence in younger dogs. (Generally, tumors are more common in older dogs).
It is more frequently observed in pure breeds like Boxers and Dachshunds, and tends to occur on the head.

Due to its rapid growth, the tumor can suddenly become large, which may startle you, but there’s no need to worry as it is a benign tumor.
The affected area with the tumor may become domed, accompanied by redness and hair loss, but it is not painful.

However, since it is difficult to distinguish it from other malignant tumors based solely on appearance, it is recommended to have it checked by a veterinarian.

Treatment of Cutaneous Histiocytoma

Cutaneous histiocytomas often grow rapidly and then gradually shrink and disappear over a few months.
Some tumors may also disappear with the application of steroid ointments.

However, be cautious not to mistake it for a mast cell tumor, which also appears on the skin but is malignant and has a poor prognosis.

For an early diagnosis, it is advisable to have the tumor surgically removed and examined. Although cutaneous histiocytomas are benign, surgical removal is recommended because distinguishing them from dangerous mast cell tumors can be difficult.

Prognosis of Cutaneous Histiocytoma

As a benign tumor, it does not metastasize to the internal organs and generally does not pose a life-threatening risk.

Cutaneous histiocytomas may grow rapidly within a few days to weeks and then start to shrink over 1-2 months, disappearing naturally. However, some tumors might not shrink naturally and could keep growing instead.

If the tumor becomes too large, the surgical removal might be extensive, increasing the physical burden on the dog, so it is advisable to remove it early and conduct a pathological examination to confirm it is not malignant cancer.

Even though the tumor is benign, its development suggests some imbalance in the body. Ensure that your dog does not lack exercise or sleep.
Excessive stress is also harmful. It is better to avoid low-quality food, as these factors can contribute to a weakened immune system.

Immune Support for Dogs with Cutaneous Histiocytoma

When treating a dog with a cutaneous histiocytoma, surgery is the first-line option.
Anesthesia is required for surgery.

Because anesthesia can lower the immune system, immune support is necessary.
At Cordy Laboratory, we research how Cordy works in supporting the immune system.

In addition, combining it with domestic SPF pig placental extract powder can accelerate skin wound healing.

While we don’t know how responsive the treatments will be, there is a significant possibility of restoring the dog’s appetite and vitality.

Our laboratory continues to research Cordy, which is expected to have immune-modulating effects, and domestic SPF pig-derived placental extract powder, expected to protect liver function. If you have any questions, please contact us.
