Melanoma is an extremely malignant tumor with a high recurrence rate even after surgery. However, we have received case reports from veterinarians indicating that it can be controlled long-term without surgery through the use of Cordy, and we would like to share this information.

Case of Oral Melanoma (Labrador Retriever)

Overview of Treatment Progress

Oral melanoma is highly malignant and has a high recurrence rate even after surgery. It is commonly found in Retrievers, and chemotherapy is mostly ineffective, resulting in a poor prognosis. This particular case also involves a Labrador Retriever with oral melanoma.

Considering the background and the owner’s wish not to remove the lower jaw, a non-surgical treatment plan was developed. The tumor was ablated with a hyperthermia device, combined with lupeol, dendritic cell therapy, and supplements, allowing long-term control of the condition.

About Oral Melanoma

Mandibular Melanoma

Oral melanoma often progresses rapidly, and conventional cancer treatments result in a poor prognosis. Surgical excision as a curative treatment is highly invasive and often results in significant aesthetic changes due to the loss of part or most of the jaw.

When only the tumor is removed as a palliative surgery, the recurrence rate is very high. Although there is information that radiation is effective, it often provides only temporary control.

Chemotherapy does not yield good responses and the side effects can outweigh the benefits of treatment.

When chemotherapy is recommended, please read the following article first.

Initiatives of Kamo Animal Hospital

Dr. Ito from Kamo Animal Hospital (Higashi-Hiroshima City) reports cases of treating oral melanoma with alternative therapies.

Unlike conventional cancer treatments, alternative therapies have the distinct advantage of placing minimal burden on the animal. This allows for multiple alternative therapies to be carried out concomitantly, enabling the design of highly flexible treatment plans tailored to individual cases.

Since cancer is common in elderly dogs, treatments that minimize physical stress are desirable. Attention is increasingly being directed towards alternative therapies as a substitute for major surgeries and conventional chemotherapy.

This case of oral melanoma demonstrates excellent results through the following aggressive treatments with multiple alternative therapies, comparable to conventional excisional surgeries:

  • Dendritic Cell Therapy
  • Hyperthermia Therapy (Ablation)
  • Lupeol
  • Cordy
