Animonda is a German manufacturer and part of the heristo group.

The heristo group is a leading company in the food industry, dealing with meat and fish. All of their products, whether for humans or pets, are manufactured under the same high-quality standards.

This means that the ingredients are ‘human grade,’ making them a safe option to feed your pets.

The ‘INTEGRA PROTECT’ line we handle is a therapeutic diet developed by Animonda in collaboration with veterinarians.

① Kidney Care

This is a therapeutic diet for managing chronic kidney disease (CKD).

By reducing the content of protein and phosphorus, it is expected to support kidney function.

Since it also does not contain ‘gluten,’ which can burden the intestines, it is suitable for pets that have weak stomachs as well as those with CKD.

Typically, there are limited options for kidney care food, but this kidney care wet food offers:

For dogs: 3 types – beef, pork, chicken

For cats: 6 types – beef, pork, chicken, turkey, duck, veal

Many pets with kidney disease have sensitive tastes and may get bored of the same flavor, so it’s helpful to have a variety to rotate through.

For dry food, it contains a high amount of fat for calorie supplementation. To avoid the burden on the body from oxidized fats, it is recommended to consume within 7-10 days after opening.

<Recommended Usage Period>

Initially within 6 months.

Before use and if you wish to extend the period, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian.

Dogs are closer to omnivorous carnivores and need to ingest sufficient protein.

“High-protein diet ≠ Kidney disease.” Therefore, this therapeutic diet should only be used for dogs that have been specifically diagnosed with kidney disease by a veterinarian (stage 3 or higher according to the IRIS classification, a marker for kidney disease).

If you are unsure about the stage of your pet’s kidney disease, please refer to the following URL and have your most recent blood test results on hand.

Chronic Kidney Disease in Dogs and Cats (Japanese)

② Gastrointestinal Care

This is a therapeutic diet specially developed to manage acute diarrhea symptoms.

It uses hydrolyzed proteins to reduce the digestive burden.

Furthermore, it contains Yucca schidigera to prevent struvite.

Since an imbalanced intestinal environment can also cause urinary stones such as struvite, it is beneficial to be able to address both gastrointestinal health and urinary stones.

<Recommended Usage Period>

Up to 12 weeks.

Before use and if you wish to extend the period, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian.

③ Allergy Care

This is a therapeutic diet specifically developed for food allergies, containing only one type of animal protein, which is the cause of allergies.

For wet food, there are four types for both dogs and cats: turkey, horse, chicken, lamb. There’s also pork for cats only, so please choose the protein source that does not cause an allergic reaction.

<Recommended Usage Period>

3-8 weeks.

Before use and if you wish to extend the period, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian.

④ pH Care (Cats only)

This therapeutic diet is specially developed to make it difficult for urinary stones to form, supporting the maintenance of the urinary pH balance with a blend of minerals.

There are two types: one for struvite and one for calcium oxalate stones, so please choose based on the results of a urine test.

<Recommended Usage Period>

Initially within 6 months.

Before use and if you wish to extend the period, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian.

⑤ Diabetes Care (Cats only)

This is a therapeutic diet designed for diabetic pets, formulated with high protein and low carbohydrates to prevent rapid spikes in postprandial blood glucose levels.

A high protein and low carbohydrate diet is also recommended for pets with tumors, as it provides an appropriate nutritional balance. Therefore, it can also be used as food for pets with tumors.

There are six types: beef, poultry (chicken and turkey), chicken liver, rabbit, salmon, and turkey heart. It is recommended to rotate these options.

<Recommended Usage Period>

Initial period: within 6 months.

It is recommended to consult with a veterinarian before using this diet and if you plan to extend the usage period.

There is a note stating that all six types can be used indefinitely if symptoms improve. However, therapeutic diets are specifically designed to address certain diseases. Therefore, it is advisable to gradually transition to regular pet food or complete nutrition food as your pet’s condition stabilizes.

Therapeutic diets are akin to medications.

Do not incorporate or discontinue them based on your own judgment. Always consult with a veterinarian before making any changes.

### Carbohydrates: One of the Five Major Nutrients In recent years, low-carb diets have become popul

### Carbohydrates: One of the Five Major Nutrients

In recent years, low-carb diets have become popular, and there is often a misconception that low-carb means restricting carbohydrates. However, strictly speaking, carbohydrates are not equivalent to sugars.

Carbohydrates are composed of sugars and dietary fiber. Both sugars and dietary fiber are very important nutrients.

However, for pets with tumors, it is crucial to choose the “type” of sugar carefully.

### Types of Sugars

Sugars can be classified based on the number of glucose molecules they contain: monosaccharides, disaccharides, trisaccharides, and polysaccharides.

**Types of Sugars:**

**1. Monosaccharides**
Glucose, fructose, and galactose

**2. Disaccharides**
Sucrose (table sugar) = glucose + fructose
Maltose = two glucose molecules
Lactose = glucose + galactose

**3. Trisaccharides**
Oligosaccharides

**4. Polysaccharides**
Starch, dextrin, glycogen, and sugar alcohols

One important point to consider when consuming these sugars is where they are broken down into glucose.

– **Monosaccharides and Disaccharides**
Monosaccharides and disaccharides turn into glucose in the small intestine. Once broken down into glucose, they are absorbed through the small intestine and used as an energy source in the body.

They are broken down and absorbed faster than fats, making them suitable for quickly replenishing energy and raising blood sugar levels during intense exercise or hypoglycemia.

However, glucose is not only the sole nutrient source for cancer cells (tumor cells) but also raises blood sugar levels, stimulating insulin secretion, which in turn promotes the occurrence, growth, and metastasis of cancer.

Stimulating insulin secretion also puts a burden on the pancreas, increasing the risk of diabetes when the pancreas becomes exhausted.

Additionally, AGEs (Advanced Glycation End-products) produced from “glyceraldehyde,” a metabolic product of fructose, are highly toxic and generate a lot of reactive oxygen species. This cell damage caused by reactive oxygen species may also increase cancer risk.

Moreover, glucose turns into neutral fat due to insulin, so excessive intake of glucose can lead to obesity.

Obesity can cause inflammation and various other symptoms, so it is important to be mindful of excessive glucose intake — particularly monosaccharides and disaccharides.

– **Oligosaccharides**
Oligosaccharides are not broken down by enzymes but are decomposed and utilized as food by beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria and butyrate-producing bacteria in the large intestine. When beneficial bacteria increase, they produce short-chain fatty acids like acetic acid, butyric acid, and propionic acid.

The production of fatty acids causes the intestinal environment to become slightly acidic, inhibiting the activity of harmful bacteria and activating intestinal peristalsis, thereby improving the intestinal environment.

Butyric acid is expected to act on regulatory T cells (Treg), which are involved in autoimmune diseases, to help prevent the immune system from running amok.

Supporting beneficial bacteria with oligosaccharides can consequently lead to increased short-chain fatty acid production, essential for improving the intestinal environment.

Various types of oligosaccharides include isomalt oligosaccharides, fructooligosaccharides, xylooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides, soybean oligosaccharides, milk oligosaccharides, raffinose (beet oligosaccharide), and kestose (an extract from oligosaccharides that selectively provides nutrients to beneficial bacteria like bifidobacteria).

Be cautious when buying commercially available oligosaccharides, as they may contain other sugars like glucose-fructose syrup. Always check the ingredients.

– **Polysaccharides**
Polysaccharides have a structure containing many monosaccharides, so they take longer to break down, resulting in a more gradual absorption.

Therefore, they do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels like monosaccharides, but they still eventually break down into monosaccharides, leading to obesity if consumed excessively.

Among the polysaccharides, starch known as “resistant starch” is not digested in the small intestine and reaches the large intestine, where it activates intestinal bacteria, improves constipation, and helps prevent rapid blood sugar spikes. Because it has properties of both insoluble and soluble fiber, it is sometimes referred to as a hyper-fiber or comfortable starch.
Resistant starch is found in legumes, grains, and tubers. When these foods are cooked and gelatinized (converted to alpha-starch), they become digestible and can cause an increase in blood glucose levels. However, by cooling them again, the starch recrystallizes and becomes less digestible, effectively turning into fiber.

Since legumes, grains, and tubers also contain other carbohydrates, it’s important not to consume them in excess. However, they do serve as a source of resistant starch.

A deficiency in dietary fiber can also lead to a deterioration in gut health. Therefore, when incorporating these foods into your diet, keep the portions small and make sure to cool them after cooking before consumption.

Among grains, a new variety called “BarleyMax” has been developed to have a higher content of resistant starch, so using this grain might be beneficial.

There are various types of carbohydrates, so it is vital to understand which ones to limit when it comes to ‘carbohydrate restriction.’

For pets with tumors, it is important to minimize carbohydrate intake as much as possible, but optimizing gut health is also a fast track to stabilizing the immune system. This might involve actively incorporating oligosaccharides in their diet. Additionally, using low-GI carbohydrate sources can be beneficial as an energy and calorie source.

Do check the amount of carbohydrates and fiber in the food your pet usually eats and use this information to review and improve their daily diet.

Although the calendar marks the beginning of “summer” from May 5th, this year has seen drastic temperature fluctuations, and many pets and their owners may be experiencing unstable health.

Japan, being an island nation, is very susceptible to humidity, and the season that is most affected by this is the upcoming “tsuyu (rainy season).”

In traditional East Asian medicine, the rainy season corresponds with the period known as “doyou,” which is considered a time of seasonal transition that burdens the spleen and stomach (digestive system).

The spleen and stomach are responsible for digesting consumed food, and when their function declines, it becomes difficult to generate energy for the body.

It is particularly noticeable that many pets suffering from tumors also have weakened spleen and stomach functions. Supporting these organs can lead to the overall improvement of the pet’s body.

However, the challenge is that the spleen and stomach are easily affected by “shitsu-ja (adverse effects of humidity).” Therefore, during the rainy season, it is especially important to support the spleen and stomach.

So, how should we provide this support?
Here are two points that we suggest you review immediately.

1. Feed slowly
Many of the pets brought to our consultation already struggle with eating, so the act of feeding them slowly might already be something they do. However, for pets on steroids or those with a healthy appetite, there seem to be many who eat too quickly.

Behaviors such as eating grass during a walk, vomiting stomach acid, eating feces, licking their paws, or scratching behind their ears may indicate stress on their spleen and stomach.

Unlike humans, dogs and cats have teeth designed for tearing, making it difficult for them to chew thoroughly. However, it is crucial for them to actively move their mouths while eating.

For pets that tend to eat quickly, we recommend using anti-gulping bowls or spreading food out on a plate, similar to “wanko soba” style, where they are fed one bite at a time.

There isn’t an exact recommended time for each meal, but from experience, spending at least five minutes feeding them seems to alleviate many of their discomforts.

Please review how much time your pet is taking to eat.

2. Avoid cold and fatty foods

Dogs and cats do not open refrigerators or take snacks from shelves themselves. This means that what they eat is what we humans give them.

In warmer seasons, we may want to give them something cold to eat, and some households may add lots of ice to their drinking water. However, consuming cold items directly lowers body temperature and weakens organ function.

Additionally, fatty foods can strain their digestion. Do you know which foods are high in fat for them?

For us humans, fried foods are an obvious answer, but for pets, it is their food that tends to be high in fat.

In dry food, a crude fat content exceeding 15% seems relatively high to me personally.

Especially with commercial products, oxidation of the fats starts from the time they are manufactured, so one must also consider the damage from oxidized fats.

For pets that eat little, you may need items with higher calories in small amounts, which often means higher-fat foods. In such cases, besides feeding them slowly, include digestive enzymes like green tripe to ease the burden on their spleen and stomach.

By paying attention to these two points, you can expect significant improvements in your pet’s condition.

To supplement their nutrition, we recommend amino acid supplements and green tripe.

Supporting the spleen and stomach generates energy and builds the strength required to fight ongoing illnesses.

Please consider incorporating these practices within manageable limits.

Many of the pets we consult with suffer from tumors. From the perspective of traditional oriental me

Many of the pets we consult with suffer from tumors. From the perspective of traditional oriental medicine, tumors are often regarded as “Oketsu,” which refers to stasis caused by thickened blood. Although lipomas are benign tumors, their significant growth is considered to be due to “Suitai” or water stasis.

A common factor in both conditions is “stagnation.”

No matter how good the food or supplements are, if the body is stagnant, the results may not be satisfactory.

While incorporating beneficial substances, it is also essential to eliminate the bad ones through detoxification. However, for senior pets or those with illnesses, their ability to naturally detoxify is often weakened.

Thus, when consulting with clients, we emphasize the importance of massage.

By improving circulation in the body through human touch, it not only enhances the body’s response but also provides valuable communication time between the pet and the owner. The term “teate” (hand care) suggests that touch can alleviate pain, soothe the mind, and stimulate the production of oxytocin, known as the “happiness hormone” or “bonding hormone,” providing a healing experience for the pet.

There are various massage techniques, but on this page, we will introduce some simple methods.

Stroke from head to tail along the back.

This serves as a signal to start the massage.

While taking deep breaths, gently stroke the back.

The spine has two meridians: “Du mai” and “Bladder meridian.”

Du mai is a meridian that activates the body’s energy, while the Bladder meridian regulates the functions of the urinary and reproductive systems.

By targeting these areas, it is expected to balance the body’s water metabolism and help eliminate excess fluids through urination.

Massage the front limbs

Massage in a circular motion from the shoulders to the paws.

Many pets suffer from cold extremities with poor blood flow, so be sure to also massage the paw pads.

Massage the hind limbs

Massage from the lower back to the paws in the same way as step ②.

Especially around the hind limbs, many meridians regulate the digestive system, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and bladder. Therefore, pay extra attention when massaging the hind limbs.

Massage the tail

Gently grasp the base of the tail and slide your hand toward the tip.

At the tail’s tip, there is a pressure point called “Bitan,” which is beneficial for relieving constipation.

Since regular bowel movements are considered a significant part of detoxification, ensure to stimulate this pressure point for constipated pets.

Stimulate the “Yongquan” point

The base of the hind paw pads contains a point called “Yongquan.”

This point is said to be the source of the body’s vital energy and helps to regulate the overall circulation.

Gently press towards the toes.

For small dogs, using a cotton swab or the tip of a pen may make this easier.

Pull the skin on the back

Divide the back from the head to the base of the tail into five sections and lift the skin in each section. If one section does not stretch well, it indicates stagnation, so massage around that area in a circular motion.

The above are simple massages that anyone can do, but please note a few important points.

＜Important Point ①: When you have time and are in a relaxed state＞

Think about it from your perspective; if someone who is irritable or anxious massages you, it won’t feel good, right?

Make sure you are calm and composed before starting the massage.
If you perform a massage when you don’t have much time or when you feel anxious, it might cause discomfort to your pet.

Massage should ideally be done every day, but don’t force it.

Try to incorporate it as part of the time to bond with your pet when you have sufficient time and are in a calm state of mind.

<Note 2: Don't Force It>

If you touch an area where circulation is poor, it might cause pain or discomfort, and your pet may resist. There are also pets who simply do not like being touched in general.

No matter how beneficial it is for their health, forcing it will cause stress and disrupt their immune balance.

If your pet shows resistance, stop immediately and try again at another time or on another day, gradually getting them accustomed to it. Additionally, many people tend to apply too much pressure in an effort to help their pet.

The appropriate pressure is about enough to slightly indent a balloon.

If your pet resists, it might be a good idea to reconsider the amount of pressure you are using.

Incorporating at-home care can lead to changes in how your pet responds to treatment at the vet, and their overall health condition may improve even if you continue using the same food and supplements.

Please consider incorporating massage into your daily routine.

Many of the pets we consult with suffer from tumors. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Med

Many of the pets we consult with suffer from tumors. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a tumor is referred to as “Oketsu,” indicating stagnation caused by thick, sluggish blood. Additionally, lipomas, which are benign tumors that can grow large, are considered to be caused by “Sutai,” or water retention.

The common factor in both cases is “stagnation.”

No matter how good the diet or supplements are, if the body’s internal environment remains stagnant, the response can often be lackluster.

While it’s very important to incorporate good elements and effectively eliminate bad ones through detox, senior pets and those with illnesses often have weakened abilities to detoxify on their own.

Hence, when consulting with clients, we emphasize the importance of massage.

By improving bodily circulation with human touch, not only can the body’s response be more noticeable, but this also creates a great opportunity for communication between the pet and the owner. As the term “healing touch” suggests, physical touch can alleviate pain, calm the mind, and stimulate the secretion of oxytocin, the hormone known for promoting bonding and happiness. This practice can thus serve as a soothing time for your pet.

There are various methods of massage, but on this page, we will introduce easy-to-perform techniques.

Introducing Massage Techniques for Dogs and Cats

Stroking from Head to Tail (Back): Effective for Urination Issues

This can serve as a signal to start the massage.

While taking deep breaths, gently and slowly stroke from head to tail.

Along the spine runs the Du Meridian and the Bladder Meridian, which are pathways of energy.

The Du Meridian is involved in the body’s energy, while the Bladder Meridian regulates the urinary and reproductive systems.

Massaging these areas can balance water metabolism in the body and help eliminate excess fluids through urination.

Front Limb Massage: Including the Paw Pads is Key

Gently massage from the shoulder blade to the paw in a circular motion.

Because the extremities often suffer from poor blood flow and cold, make sure to also massage the paw pads.

Hind Limb Massage: Conduct More Thoroughly than the Front Limbs

Massage from the lower back to the paw, similar to the front limb massage.

Particularly in the hind limbs, there are many meridians that regulate the digestive organs, liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and bladder, so take special care to massage these areas thoroughly.

Tail Massage: Pay Extra Attention for Constipated Dogs and Cats

Gently grasp the base of the tail and slowly move towards the tip.

The tail tip has a point called Bi Duan, which is known to help with constipation.

Since bowel movements are considered one of the body’s main detox mechanisms, make sure to stimulate this point in pets suffering from constipation.

Stimulating Yongquan: Harmonize Overall Circulation

At the base of the hind paw pad is a point called Yongquan.

This point is believed to be the source of the body’s life energy and helps to regulate overall circulation.

Gently press towards the direction of the toes.

For small dogs, you might find it easier to use a cotton swab or the end of a pen to press.

Pulling the Skin on the Back: Don’t Miss Signs of Stagnation

Divide the back from the head to the base of the tail into about five sections and lift the skin upward in each section.

Areas where the skin doesn’t lift well are indicative of stagnation; focus on massaging around these areas in a circular motion.

The above techniques are simple enough for anyone to perform, but there are some important points to keep in mind, so please also review these.

Two Important Points When Massaging Dogs and Cats

Perform When You Have Ample Time and Patience

Think about it for a moment—would you enjoy a massage from someone who is irritated or restless?
When you don’t have much time and your mind is unsettled, giving your pet a massage might cause discomfort.

While it’s desirable to give a massage every day, don’t overdo it.

Incorporate it as a time to bond with your pet when you have both the time and mental space to do so.

Avoid Forcing It

Touching areas where circulation is poor may cause pain or discomfort, making your pet resist.

Some pets simply do not like to be touched in general.

No matter how beneficial a massage might be, forcing it can cause stress and disrupt their immune balance.

If your pet shows discomfort, stop the massage and try again later, gradually getting them used to it.

Additionally, it’s not uncommon for some people to apply too much pressure because they want their pet to feel better.

Imagine using a gentle pressure that would deflate a balloon slightly.

If your pet resists, it might be a good idea to reassess your pressure.

Summary

Incorporating care at home can change how your pet responds to treatments at the vet. Even with the same diet and supplements, their condition may improve.

Try incorporating massage into your daily routine.

Announcement from the British Veterinary Association

News has been circulating that the British Veterinary Association has urged people with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 to keep their cats indoors.

Articles reporting statements such as “Cats and ferrets are at risk of COVID-19 infection” and “Animals of the feline family can sometimes contract COVID-19″ are becoming more common.

According to the British Veterinary Association, “Animals that have been in contact with a person infected with COVID-19 may carry the virus on their fur, potentially spreading it.”

They also emphasize the importance of owners maintaining good hand hygiene.

Chinese Research Team Publishes Paper in Science

A Chinese research team has published results in the online edition of the American scientific journal “Science,” investigating the possibility of animals spreading COVID-19.

The study involved experiments where high concentrations of COVID-19 were administered nasally to pets and livestock.

The findings confirmed that cats and ferrets are susceptible to the virus, as it replicates more easily in their respiratory systems. It was also confirmed that cat-to-cat transmission can occur.
*However, since this involved experimentally administering high concentrations of the virus, it remains uncertain if similar transmission would occur naturally.

On the other hand, dogs, pigs, and chickens showed a lower susceptibility to infection.

It was also reported that a tiger at a zoo in New York, USA, tested positive for COVID-19. It is believed that the tiger may have been infected by a zookeeper.

For Cat Owners

Although it is not yet definitively clear whether cats can contract COVID-19, there is a possibility that the risk of infection may not be zero. Therefore, please continue to practice good hygiene, such as consistent handwashing and gargling, to reduce any potential risk.

Additionally, in the unfortunate event that someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, it is advisable to avoid contact with your cat for about two weeks as a precaution.

The following is a summary of the functions of the amino acids vital for the survival of dogs and cats. Please take a moment to read through it.

Leucine

Leucine is said to promote muscle formation, prevent muscle breakdown, and enhance liver function. Additionally, it increases the secretion of insulin (a hormone that lowers blood sugar levels), helping to transport glucose into muscle cells. It is also expected to help alleviate stress due to its similar effects to endorphins, which are neurotransmitters in the brain that provide pain relief and a sense of happiness.

【Foods rich in leucine】
– Beef
– Pork
– Chicken
– Liver
– Salmon
– Horse mackerel
– Bonito
– Soy products

【Potential issues due to leucine deficiency】
– Decreased liver function, which can lead to insulin deficiency and cause diabetes
– Reduced muscle strength
– Accumulation of fatigue
– Hair loss

Isoleucine

Isoleucine is known to promote muscle and body growth, exert a vasodilatory effect, and strengthen liver function. Additionally, isoleucine uniquely supports nerve function. Other important roles include fatigue recovery, diabetes prevention, and maintaining the health of skin and hair.

【Foods rich in isoleucine】
– Chicken
– Pork
– Eggs
– Salmon
– Bluefin tuna

【Potential issues due to isoleucine deficiency】
– Muscle depletion
– Diminished hair (coat) moisture
– Skin inflammation

Valine

Valine is an amino acid involved in growth, has liver-strengthening effects, regulates nitrogen balance in the blood, and aids in muscle repair. It is also beneficial for skin health, maintaining skin elasticity, and promoting detoxification by enhancing ammonia metabolism.

【Foods rich in valine】
– Liver
– Bluefin tuna
– Tofu

【Potential issues due to valine deficiency】
– Loss of appetite
– Malnutrition

Lysine

Lysine is an essential nutrient for protein construction in the body, aiding in fatigue recovery and tissue repair, and improving concentration. It also supports liver function, helps lower blood pressure, and is necessary for the production of carnitine, which helps convert fat into energy.

【Foods rich in lysine】
– Bonito
– Horse mackerel
– Chicken

【Potential issues due to lysine deficiency】
– Accumulation of fatigue
– Decreased liver function
– Increased cholesterol levels
– Anemia
– Nausea
– Dizziness

Arginine

Arginine promotes the secretion of growth hormones, strengthens muscle tissue, and enhances immunity. It also involves the secretion of insulin and glucagon, which helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Additionally, arginine aids in detoxifying ammonia and promotes vasodilation and improved blood flow through the production of nitric oxide.

【Foods rich in arginine】
– Chicken
– Pork
– Soybeans
– Unsweetened soy milk
– Freeze-dried tofu
– Sesame

【Potential issues due to arginine deficiency】
– Poor growth
– Arteriosclerosis
– Accelerated aging
– Swelling

Taurine

Taurine can be synthesized in the bodies of humans and dogs, but cats do not have the enzymes necessary to synthesize taurine and must obtain it through their diet. Taurine has benefits such as enhancing liver function, lowering blood pressure by suppressing the sympathetic nervous system (also reducing the burden on the kidneys), and providing antioxidant effects. Additionally, by eliminating bad cholesterol, taurine improves blood condition, enhances blood circulation, and activates metabolism, making it effective for anti-aging and dieting. Furthermore, since taurine is said to increase the number of mitochondria, it is also believed to boost physical strength.

【Foods Rich in Taurine】
・Oysters
・Shrimp
・Sardines
・Pacific Saury

【Consequences of Taurine Deficiency】
・Decreased vision
・Dilated cardiomyopathy
・Immune dysfunction
・Reduced reproductive function

Tryptophan

Tryptophan serves as a precursor to neurotransmitters with calming and analgesic effects (serotonin: also involved in body temperature regulation and sleep). Serotonin is converted into melatonin, which regulates the internal clock and sleep cycles. In addition, tryptophan is expected to have anti-aging effects and improve concentration and memory.

【Foods Rich in Tryptophan】
・Soy milk
・Bananas
・Dried bonito flakes

【Consequences of Tryptophan Deficiency】
・Mental instability, depression, phobia due to serotonin deficiency
・Insomnia
・Hyperactivity
・Decreased appetite and weight loss in kittens

Amino acids are more easily absorbed by the body and exhibit their respective effects when taken in a balanced manner. When giving amino acid supplements to dogs, cats, and other pets, it is advisable to choose products that contain the amino acids introduced here without unnecessary additives.

Amino acid supplements are recommended not only for pets that cannot actively consume protein but also for those with declining physical strength and for maintaining general health.

Krill oil is an oil component derived from Antarctic krill (a type of zooplankton) that contains three important nutrients in abundance:

① EPA & DHA (Omega-3 fatty acids)
② Lecithin (phospholipids)
③ Astaxanthin

EPA & DHA are also found in fish oils, and there are products available that contain salmon oil, tuna oil, and carp oil. There is a difference in the composition of EPA & DHA in fish oil and krill oil.

Fish Oil: Triglyceride-type EPA/DHA
Krill Oil: Phospholipid-type EPA/DHA

Because phospholipids are components of cell membranes, phospholipid-type EPA & DHA are easily absorbed by the body, can pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and are advantageous for brain function, aiding in the improvement of the nervous system.

In addition, krill oil contains the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin, which helps to prevent the oxidation of omega-3 fatty acids and maintain high-quality stability.

Source: PLoS ONE 7(6), e28797(2012)
Krill oil supplementation led to significant activation of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT-I, which facilitates the binding of L-carnitine and fat) and an increase in carnitine levels, promoting fatty acid oxidation in the liver. Krill oil inhibited the uncoupling effect of high-fat diets, maintained mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, suppressed weight gain, and reduced oxidative damage of lipids and proteins typically observed in animals fed a high-fat diet.

The effects of fish oil and krill oil on lipid homeostasis and inflammation were investigated in model animals chronically exposed to low levels of human tumor necrosis factor (hTNF-α).
Administering krill oil was found to not only reduce plasma triacylglycerol and total cholesterol levels and promote β-oxidation in mitochondria and peroxisomes but also regulate lipid metabolism by improving overall carnitine turnover. In the case of fish oil, although it did not exhibit as significant an effect on reducing plasma triacylglycerol as krill oil, it significantly improved total cholesterol levels. There was no prominent difference between the krill oil and fish oil groups concerning inflammatory cytokine values.

In Japan, a report from the “Functional Food Evaluation Model Business” has given the highest scientific evidence level “A” to EPA and DHA for cardiovascular risk reduction and lowering plasma triglyceride levels, including a well-established mechanism of action. Unlike fish oil, where EPA and DHA are components of triglycerides, in krill oil they are incorporated into phospholipids, offering superior acute effects and no fishy aftertaste. Furthermore, krill oil contains the antioxidant astaxanthin, which prevents fatty acid oxidation and helps maintain product quality and stability.

Source: Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Vol. 26, No. 1, 39-48 (2007)
A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of Neptune krill oil on CRP (C-reactive protein, an inflammation marker) in patients with chronic inflammation. Seven days after initiating intake, the placebo group showed an increase in CRP, while the Neptune krill oil group saw a 19.3% decrease. This reduction continued at 14 and 30 days (p<0.001). Furthermore, the WOMAC score (a measure of knee function: higher scores indicate worse function) was significantly reduced. While the placebo group showed an increase in CRP until day 14, it saw a 25.1% reduction by day 30. These results indicate that daily intake of 300mg/day Neptune krill oil can suppress inflammation and alleviate arthritis symptoms within 7-14 days.

To determine the effect of krill oil on mild knee pain, a six-month randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted from September 2014 to March 2015 with 50 adults (ages 38-85) experiencing mild knee pain. Participants received either 2g of krill oil or placebo. Improvements were observed in both groups using the JKOM (Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure) and JOA (Japanese Orthopedic Association) standards, but the krill oil group showed significant improvements in knee pain and stiffness on two JKOM items, as well as notable reductions in sleep-related and standing knee pain, and increased knee range of motion. These findings suggest that krill oil intake (2g/day for 30 days) can improve self-reported symptoms of mild knee pain in adults.

An experiment was conducted on the proliferation inhibition of human osteosarcoma cells exposed to krill oil, fish oil, EPA, and DHA for 72 hours. Although there was no significant change 24 hours after exposure to fish oil, krill oil showed 23% inhibition of proliferation after 24 hours, 50% after 48 hours, and 64% after 72 hours. The inhibitory effect of krill oil was equivalent to 0.5 and 1 µM of doxorubicin, commonly used for osteosarcoma treatment. This suggests that krill oil, when used in combination with standard clinical treatments, may control the growth of primary tumors and more severe metastasis.

A double-blind trial was conducted over 12 weeks on 45 elderly men aged 60-72, divided into three groups: those receiving 2g/day of sardine oil (EPA 491mg + DHA 251mg = 742mg/day), those receiving 2g/day of krill oil (EPA 193mg + DHA 93mg = 285mg/day), and those receiving a placebo containing neither EPA nor DHA (2g of medium-chain fatty acids). In the krill oil group, increased concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin in the brain was noted, indicating significant brain activation.
For liver function, rats were given a single oral dose of olive oil 3mg/kg (control group), krill oil 200mg/kg (low dose group), or krill oil 1000mg/kg (high dose group), followed by a single oral dose of 12mL/kg alcohol after 1 hour to observe the effects on liver function.
In the group administered with krill oil, the increase in blood alcohol concentration, state of intoxication, and elevations in blood AST and ALT were suppressed, suggesting that krill oil has a function to mitigate liver damage. When krill oil was ingested during the creation of an alcoholic fatty liver model in rats, the formation of alcoholic fatty liver was inhibited.

One issue that becomes more common as humidity starts to rise is ‘heatstroke’. Heatstroke risks increase starting around May and become extremely high during the rainy season.

Pets such as dogs and cats are covered in fur, which not only makes it easy for heat to get trapped in the fur layer but also makes it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature by sweating like humans do. This makes them more prone to heatstroke than humans.

In recent years, summer temperatures have reached dangerously high levels, and it is not uncommon for pets to lose their lives. Additionally, dogs and cats live close to the ground. It is said that the temperature near asphalt can be approximately 5–20°C higher than our living areas, which indicates how extraordinary the heat can be.

Even healthy pets are at high risk for heatstroke. For senior pets, those with tumors, or those suffering from any medical conditions, even mild heatstroke can be fatal due to their generally lower stamina.

To help your pets get through this hot period, we hope you can use this page to learn some key points on heatstroke prevention.

Symptoms of Heatstroke｜Is Panting a Sign of Severity?

The following changes can be observed in pets suffering from heatstroke:

・Lack of energy
・Staggering
・Hot ears or overall body
・Gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea
・Excessive drooling
・Panting (breathing with an open mouth)
・Reddening of the eyes or oral mucous membranes

In severe cases, pets may experience fainting, convulsions, bleeding such as hematemesis, melena, hematuria, cyanosis, and in many cases, this can lead to death.

At animal hospitals, along with the above symptoms, a rectal temperature (measured with a thermometer inserted into the anus) exceeding 41°C is diagnosed as heatstroke. Generally, temperatures above 41°C can cause damage that spreads to the brain. If it exceeds 43°C, it can lead to the failure of internal organs, drastically increasing the mortality rate.

While it is impossible to suppress the might of nature with human power, small adjustments in daily life can help prevent heatstroke in pets.

Heatstroke Prevention

① Room Temperature & Humidity

For pets, the ideal temperature and humidity are those that we feel are a bit chilly, as they are like us wearing a fur coat. Ideally, the room temperature should be 22–25℃ and humidity should be 40–60%. As some pets are more sensitive to cold, providing towels or blankets in the room can allow them to adjust their temperature themselves. However, be careful not to cool their abdomen or lower back too much, as the intestines, which control immunity, might get cold, leading to a weakened immune system. For pets that don’t mind, consider using a belly band to prevent lower body cooling.

② Fresh Water

Many dogs tend to drink water actively, but many cats, who have a history of living in deserts, do not naturally take in much water. Since pets can’t sweat, they release body heat through urination. Without proper hydration, not only can it become difficult to produce urine, but waste products that should be excreted can become concentrated, potentially causing kidney failure due to blockages. Experiment with different water placements, container materials, and water temperatures to encourage your pet to drink more.

There are several ways to check for dehydration. One simple method is to grasp the skin at the back of your pet’s neck and pull. If the skin returns immediately to its original position, their internal water levels are adequate.

However, if it takes a few seconds to return to its normal state, this indicates dehydration. Other indicators include checking if the gums are moist, if the color of the paw pads and mucous membranes in the eyes is normal, and if the coat lacks shine.
When dehydration occurs, solutions containing electrolytes, such as oral rehydration solutions, are more effectively absorbed by the body than pure water, thus ensuring smooth correction of dehydration. While commercial products are available, you can also make your own at home when time is short. Homemade oral rehydration solution can be prepared by adding about 1-2 grams of salt and 20-40 grams of sugar to 1 liter of water. For human consumption, adding lemon juice or grapefruit juice can make it more palatable.

Moreover, even if hydration is maintained, it is essential that fluids circulate properly throughout the body. In older pets or those with certain conditions, blood flow tends to stagnate. This stagnation can lead to lumps, fatty tumors, or warts. After taking fluids, encourage proper circulation by massaging the body, within their comfort limits, or by warming the lower body if it feels cold.

③ Consumption of Foods That Remove Body Heat

Foods have ‘five properties’ that either warm or cool the body, so it is important to choose foods accordingly. Summer vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce naturally cool the body, and although it might be surprising, burdock root also has a cooling effect. Among proteins, horse meat is known to cool the body. However, in older pets or those with tumors, excessive cooling can be burdensome, so it’s best to offer these foods in moderation or to use ‘neutral’ foods that neither warm nor cool the body.

During this season, it is advisable to avoid certain foods that generate heat in the body, such as venison and lamb. Consuming such heat-generating foods in a period prone to heat buildup can worsen the animal’s condition.

Choose foods and ingredients that suit your pet’s constitution and environment.

④ Regulating Immunity

Heat stress can reduce immunity, making animals more susceptible to illness. In addition to managing heat as outlined in points ① to ③, maintaining daily care to balance immunity helps prevent various diseases.

Stress also puts a strain on the liver, so liver care is essential. Placenta extract derived from SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) pigs is recommended for liver care. Placenta is expected to support liver function, which can help reduce liver burden, maintain energy and appetite, support metabolism, and ensure smooth nutrient absorption.

Our research lab is studying Cordyceps, which is expected to stabilize immunity. When combined with organic germanium, it is believed to enhance blood flow, aiding the rapid absorption of fluids in the body and facilitating the removal of waste and heat through urination.

Reviewing the environment, hydration methods, food choices, and integrating supplements to regulate immunity can be a direct way to improve your pet’s health. Start with what you can manage and help your pets enjoy a serene life.

What is Epilepsy?

The brain contains tens of billions of nerve cells, and it conducts information transmission through their electrical activities.

When excitation is strong, inhibitory nerves function to control it, and conversely, when inhibition is strong, excitatory nerves work to maintain balance. However, when there is an abnormality in the balance between excitation and inhibition, it can cause intense electrical disturbances, leading to a phenomenon known as epilepsy.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), epilepsy is defined as:

“A chronic brain disorder with various etiologies that is characterized by recurrent seizures resulting from excessive firing of neurons in the brain, accompanied by various clinical symptoms and examination findings.”

The symptoms vary depending on which part of the brain the abnormal nerve activity occurs.

Just like humans, dogs and cats can also suffer from epilepsy.

Types and Characteristics of Epilepsy in Dogs and Cats

Epilepsy can be classified into two types: “idiopathic” and “symptomatic.”

1. Idiopathic Epilepsy

Also known as true epilepsy, idiopathic epilepsy is of unknown cause, and no abnormalities are found even with examinations.
Characteristics of idiopathic epilepsy include:

The first seizure usually occurs in young dogs around 1-5 years old

The average onset age for cats is 3.8 years

There is a high possibility if the interval between the first and second seizure is less than 4 weeks

Brain MRI appears normal

Recovery after a seizure is quick

Each seizure typically lasts a few minutes

They appear completely normal when not having seizures

In dogs, males have a 1.4 times higher incidence rate compared to females

2. Symptomatic Epilepsy

Symptomatic epilepsy is caused by some sort of brain injury or damage.
It can occur due to various causes including brain trauma from accidents, brain hemorrhage, low oxygen levels, encephalitis, or meningitis.
Characteristics of symptomatic epilepsy include:

It can occur at any age, whether young or old

Some abnormalities can be seen in MRI

Recovery after a seizure is quick

Each seizure typically lasts a few minutes

Due to an underlying disease, there are neurological abnormalities even when not having seizures

Symptoms – Epilepsy in Dogs and Cats

As mentioned above, the symptoms vary depending on which part of the brain has abnormal nerve activity.
The meanings of the kanji characters in “epilepsy” are as follows:

癲: Flipping over
癇: A disease accompanied by convulsions and fainting

Overall, it implies a strong sense of “falling over.”

Common symptoms include:

Convulsions or rigidity throughout the body

Excessive drooling

Convulsions in parts of the face or limbs

These are collectively known as “epileptic seizures.”
Note: “Epilepsy = Disease Name” and “Epileptic Seizure = Symptom”

However, there are symptoms similar to epileptic seizures known as “epileptiform seizures.”
Epileptiform seizures resemble epilepsy symptoms but are caused by different reasons (such as an internal organ disorder or ingestion of toxic plants) other than brain nerve issues.

For differential diagnosis between “epileptic seizures” and “epileptiform seizures,” refer to the questionnaire by the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force (IVETF).

Treatment Methods for Epilepsy in Dogs and Cats

Since it is difficult to completely eliminate epileptic seizures, the treatment goal is to reduce the frequency of seizures and lengthen the intervals between them.
The primary treatment method is the use of antiepileptic drugs.

Sometimes a single drug is used, while other times a combination is used.
In general, once the medication is started, it has to be continued for life.

Timing to Start Medication

When there have been two or more epileptic seizures within six months

After experiencing status epilepticus

When abnormal behavior after a seizure is serious or persists for more than 24 hours

When the duration of the epileptic seizures is gradually getting longer, or the frequency of the epileptic seizures is increasing

Types of Anticonvulsants

Phenobarbital

Zonisamide

Potassium Bromide

Levetiracetam

Gabapentin

These medications are used.
It is a positive sign if the intervals between seizures lengthen and the frequency and severity decrease.
However, as with any medication, do not forget that there are both benefits and potential side effects.

From the Perspective of Oriental Medicine – Epilepsy in Dogs and Cats

The season where epileptic seizures are more likely to occur is “Spring.”
Spring is associated with the liver in the theory of the Five Viscera and Six Bowels.
The liver not only regulates the flow of blood but also adjusts the flow of Qi, the energy source of life within the body.

In spring, there are often windy days (such as the first gale of spring), and, just as plants sprout and grow upwards, energy has a tendency to rise. This rising energy and wind not only affect nature but are also reflected in humans.

Harmful wind to the body is known as “pathogenic wind.”
When this pathogenic wind enters the body, it makes Qi rise, which can lead to increased irritability, dizziness, and may even trigger epileptic seizures.

Furthermore, just as wind shakes the trees, pathogenic wind has a shaking nature within the body, leading to symptoms like instability and dizziness.

Pathogenic wind enters through the back of the neck, so protecting the neck with a neck warmer can help prevent it and alleviate symptoms.

Additionally, using foods that promote the circulation of Qi (Qi-regulating foods) and foods that regulate the liver’s Qi (liver-soothing foods) can help in the prevention and alleviation of symptoms.

Strategies for Managing Epilepsy in Dogs and Cats

One of the causes of epileptic seizures is autoimmune disease.
Autoimmune disease occurs when the body’s immune cells mistakenly identify the body as an enemy and attack it, resulting from an imbalance in the immune system.
Stabilizing the immune system may help reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures.

Cordy, which has an immune-modulating function, can help balance the immune system, potentially reducing the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures.

Also, regulating the flow of nerves can help suppress epileptic seizures.
Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) help reduce inflammation in nerves and regulate their flow. Recently, mackerel cans have been featured frequently on TV for dementia prevention.

EPA helps maintain healthy blood properties, preventing strokes and blood clots.
Moreover, DHA can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), acting directly on the brain, which helps regulate nerve flow and prevent cellular damage and brain dysfunction caused by hypoxia, as shown in experimental results.

Especially, krill oil, not only rich in EPA and DHA but also in a form bound to phospholipids identical to cell membrane components, makes it easily absorbable by the body.
Additionally, the presence of a potent antioxidant, astaxanthin, prevents oxidation of EPA and DHA and helps reduce inflammation within the body.

Using supplements or medications that include the components mentioned here can enable the reduction of medication doses. For pets with high liver or kidney values and those who are not suited for active medication, supplements can be used safely.

Consider incorporating dietary therapy and supplements as gentle treatments instead of relying solely on medication.
