What is Krill Oil?

Krill oil is an omega-3 oil derived from Antarctic krill. It is rich in three crucial nutrients:

EPA & DHA

EPA and DHA are types of omega-3 fatty acids known for their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to improve blood circulation. DHA, in particular, can benefit the brain and retinal health, potentially preventing dementia and alleviating dry eye symptoms. While fish oil also contains EPA & DHA, the EPA & DHA in krill oil are in phospholipid-bound form, making them more water-soluble and easier for the body to absorb.

Lecithin

Lecithin is a type of phospholipid. Phospholipids are major components of cell membranes and help strengthen cell membranes.
・Taking in nutrients into cells and expelling unnecessary substances to maintain a stable cellular environment
・Transporting necessary substances
・Receptors that respond to stimuli from outside the cell

These are some of the functions it performs. When the cell membrane is damaged, these functions become sluggish. As a result, it can lead to decreased stamina, lowered resistance to infections, diminished detoxification effects, and the accumulation of toxins in the body, causing various symptoms.
Additionally, it has been found that if you are ‘unable to gain weight despite eating’ or ‘gaining weight without eating much,’ a deterioration in cell membrane function may be the cause.

Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant. By removing ‘reactive oxygen species’ that damage cells, it helps prevent cellular damage and aids in the expulsion of toxins that cause diseases and illnesses. Additionally, it prevents the oxidation of EPA and DHA and, like DHA, is one of the few antioxidants that can affect the brain’s nervous system and the retina of the eyes.
Furthermore, astaxanthin facilitates the conversion of accumulated body fat into energy, leading to the prevention of muscle fatigue and the suppression of fatigue-inducing substances.

Essential Amino Acids – BCAA

What are BCAAs?

Amino acids are materials that constitute organs, skin, muscles, fur, ligaments, cartilage, nails, and blood. They also serve as the building blocks for digestive enzymes, hormones, and immune substances, making them indispensable components for maintaining health.

Amino acids are essential for the survival of not just us humans but also animals like dogs and cats.

There are 20 types of amino acids. Among these, humans cannot synthesize 9 types, dogs cannot synthesize 10 types, and cats cannot synthesize 11 types within their bodies. These are called essential amino acids.

Essential amino acids must be consumed in a balanced manner to function effectively.

Essential amino acids are often explained using the analogy of a barrel made up of several planks. If even one plank is shorter, water will flow out from there, and you can only fill the barrel up to the height of the shortest plank.

Similarly, if there is a deficiency of any essential amino acid in the protein contained in food, the amino acid score matches that of the most deficient essential amino acid, making it difficult for the body to utilize the protein effectively.

Among these essential amino acids, valine, leucine, and isoleucine have a branched structure and are therefore called branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs (short for Branched Chain Amino Acid).

BCAAs are found in muscles and blood, and they help suppress the breakdown of protein in muscles, are involved in muscle synthesis, and are used as an energy source during exercise. However, they are nutrients that are difficult to obtain in sufficient quantities from a regular diet.

Who Should Take BCAAs?

BCAAs do not increase blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, so they are recommended to supplement nitrogen sources in pets with protein restrictions.

• Pets that you do not want to burden their liver or kidneys
• Pets that have poor protein absorption
• Pets with a small food intake
• Pets that need to maintain muscle mass
• Pets concerned about carbohydrates
• Pets with low albumin levels

BCAAs are easily absorbed in the body without the need for digestion.

They skip the digestion time in the stomach and are absorbed immediately, causing no burden on the body.

We strongly recommend incorporating BCAAs as a nutritional supplement (amino acid supplement) for pets with weakened stamina.

Pets with kidney or liver issues are often advised by veterinarians to have a diet with restricted protein. In fact, prescribed foods typically limit protein content.

However, as long as both humans and animals like dogs and cats are alive, amino acids are consumed daily, making amino acid supplementation indispensable.
BCAAs can supplement essential amino acids without burdening the body, and we highly recommend incorporating them for pets under dietary restrictions.
In addition, it is recommended to provide Green Tripe (stomach of ruminants), which supplements live enzymes, essential fatty acids, lactic acid bacteria, and high-quality protein.

Familiar Vitamins Involved in Cancer Suppression

Vitamin A and Cancer Treatment

Vitamin A helps prevent cell membrane damage and is useful in cancer treatment. While excessive intake can pose a risk of toxicity, taking it in the form of beta-carotene eliminates this concern.

Cats cannot convert beta-carotene to Vitamin A, so they need to intake retinol directly.

Vitamin C and Cancer Treatment

Vitamin C has antioxidant properties. It protects cells by taking on oxidation itself, making it crucial for cancer suppression. It also helps regenerate Vitamin E.

Oxidative reactions in the body are not universally negative; they are vital for destroying external bacteria and other functions essential for life. However, excessive oxidation can increase the chances of cancer development and promote cancer growth.

Unlike humans, dogs and cats can synthesize Vitamin C within their bodies. However, it is advisable to supplement Vitamin C externally during wasting diseases like cancer. There are no known harms from excessive intake.

High-Dose Vitamin C Administration via IV is gaining attention as a cancer treatment with very few side effects.
 

Vitamin D and Cancer Treatment

Vitamin D is known as a vitamin that strengthens bones, but large-scale studies have shown that it also has cancer-suppressing effects.

Humans can synthesize vitamin D from cholesterol in their bodies by exposure to sunlight. However, dogs and cats cannot produce vitamin D in their bodies. They must obtain it from external sources.

Cancer Treatment and Vitamin E

Vitamin E has antioxidant properties that prevent the oxidation of cell membranes. It also has immune-boosting effects, making it an important vitamin for cancer suppression.

While toxicity from excessive intake is rare, unnecessary suppression of oxidation can be disadvantageous for the body.

What Exactly Are Vitamins?

Vitamins are essential nutrients for living organisms and, unlike carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids, they are required in smaller amounts but are extremely important for maintaining life. Most vitamins cannot be synthesized in the body and must be obtained from food. Like vitamins, minerals are required in small amounts, but the key difference is that minerals are inorganic compounds, while vitamins are organic compounds.

Strictly speaking, there are 13 functionally classified vitamins. If we include vitamin-like substances, the count exceeds 30 (e.g., folic acid, amygdalin).

Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is a vitamin for humans, but interestingly, dogs and cats can synthesize it in their bodies. Hence, from the perspective of dogs and cats, ascorbic acid is not considered a vitamin.

How Do We Obtain Vitamins?

Basically, vitamins are obtained through diet. Vitamin C is abundant in vegetables and fruits, B vitamins in meat and fish, and Vitamin D in fish. It is ideal to have a balanced diet without focusing too much on one type of food. This is because some vitamins’ effects are enhanced in the presence of other vitamins. Conversely, other vitamins cannot compensate for a deficiency in one.

Many commercially available pet foods include added vitamins, but it is recommended to obtain vitamins naturally from foods. Heated pet foods lose a significant amount of the vitamins originally present in the ingredients, so it is better to add natural foods to your pet’s diet.

In cases of diseases like cancer, which consume a large amount of vitamins, it is suggested to actively intake several times the minimum required amount. Since cancer often reduces appetite, it is also important to use supplements to ensure the necessary vitamin intake.

What Are Some Simple Things You Can Do?

Even if the main diet is dry food, you can increase the intake of vitamins with just a bit of ingenuity.

For example, try adding one ingredient that hasn’t been heat-treated. Sprinkle powdered green juice (non-heat-treated type). Crush brewer’s yeast (like Ebios tablets) and mix it into the food.

I believe there are many other ways you can be creative.

Adding natural food to regular meals requires more time and effort than just giving food alone. If finding the time is difficult, you can at least sprinkle the food with green tripe (ruminant stomach) or non-heat-treated green juice, which can help your pet ingest enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and lactic acid bacteria.

When dogs, cats, or other pets are diagnosed with cancer, the first thing we would like everyone to try is dietary therapy.

It is difficult to cure cancer solely by changing the diet, but at the very least, it can help slow down the growth of cancer and curb its progression.

Additionally, implementing immune system support can significantly increase the chances of maintaining quality of life (QOL) without putting stress on the body.

The Relationship Between Diet and Cancer

There is a deep connection between the incidence of cancer and the content of the diet.

Sometimes it is said that “it is better to take in a lot of calories to build the energy to fight cancer,” but it is not simply a matter of consuming more calories.

Whether for dogs, cats, or humans, we should avoid diets high in sugars and carbohydrates or poor-quality fats.

For example, you can understand that “the incidence of cancer differs between people who eat a lot of junk food and those who eat fresh vegetables and meals prepared with high-quality oils.”

Providing a well-balanced diet and improving the living environment can reduce the chances of your beloved dogs or cats developing cancer, and even if they already have cancer, it can contribute positively to their prognosis.

We encourage pet owners to review their pets’ diets and living environments to the extent that is manageable.

Start With What You Can Do

While you cannot directly apply human dietary therapies to dogs and cats, there are many common elements that can be referenced.

Furthermore, the basic knowledge of a cancer-preventative diet will surely benefit the health of the owners as well.

Basic Knowledge of Cancer Dietary Therapy

Limit Glucose, A Nutrient Source for Cancer

Tumor cells only take in and grow by using the glucose found in carbohydrates as their sole source of nutrition.

In other words, if you can control the amount of carbohydrates in food, it may be possible to inhibit the growth of tumors.

Generally, foods high in grains tend to be rich in sugars, so caution is necessary.

The main nutrients found in food are protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

Guaranteed analysis values for protein and fat are typically listed on the packaging.

However, according to Japanese law, there is no requirement to indicate the carbohydrate or sugar content on pet food labels, so most manufacturers do not list these values.

So, how can we choose foods low in carbohydrates and sugars?

The answer is simple, we recommend foods with protein content of 35% to 40% or higher.

Foods high in protein generally have lower carbohydrate content.

There is an inverse relationship between protein and carbohydrate content, so a high-protein diet equates to a low-carbohydrate diet.

Considering that dogs are omnivores leaning towards carnivores, which is reflected in their intestinal length and dental structure,

is considered preferable.

Taking this into account, choosing food with a high protein content is deemed
“suitable for both a dog’s dietary needs and as a diet against tumors.”

Pick a few foods that interest you and check their guaranteed nutrient values before making a selection.

Proactively Provide Essential Fatty Acids

Fatty acids are essentially oils.
In pet food, they are listed as lipids (mostly as saturated fatty acids, though).

Lipids are high in calories and often regarded merely as an energy source, but they play crucial roles in maintaining health.

Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids

Alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are types of lipids known as omega-3 fatty acids, which are expected to have anti-inflammatory and blood circulation-improving effects.

Especially, DHA is known to affect the brain and retinal nerves, making it a key component in the prevention of dementia and the alleviation of symptoms like dry eye.

While fish oil is rich in EPA and DHA, krill oil derived from Antarctic krill (a type of zooplankton) contains EPA and DHA in a phospholipid-bound form, making it more soluble in water and easier for the body to absorb.

EPA and DHA can be beneficial in cancer treatment and are recommended when there’s a concern about inflammatory conditions such as atopic dermatitis, pneumonia, stomatitis, or nephritis.

However, avoid using omega-3 oils for cooking as they are highly susceptible to oxidation.

Essential Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid are examples of omega-6 fatty acids. While essential for the body, their overconsumption can pose issues, and it’s crucial to balance them with omega-3 fatty acids.

These can induce inflammation and exacerbate conditions like cancer and atopic dermatitis, so caution is advised.

Despite being labeled as healthy oils, it’s recommended to minimize the use of vegetable oils, as they are not necessarily good for health.

Provide Plenty of Protein

For dogs and cats, protein is crucial to their physical health.

Organs, muscles, blood vessels, and the brain are all composed of protein, as are vital substances such as hormones and enzymes.

Proteins are broken down into amino acids in the body and absorbed into the system.

Proteins (amino acids) are constantly re-synthesized in the body and distributed throughout.

However, they are not entirely recycled; some are excreted in urine. Hence, it is imperative to replenish proteins (amino acids) through daily meals.

If the dietary protein is insufficient, the body will break down muscle to produce amino acids.

During blood tests at the veterinary hospital, make sure to check albumin (ALB) levels. It can predict whether your pet is getting enough protein.

Extremely low albumin levels indicate a deficiency in protein/amino acids.

If albumin levels are low despite a proper diet, consider increasing the dietary protein or adding amino acid supplements.

When it is difficult to provide sufficient protein through their diet, adding pure amino acids can help maintain muscle mass.

Supplements like BCAAs (valine, leucine, isoleucine), which help in reducing muscle protein breakdown and muscle synthesis, and serve as an energy source during exercise, are available for convenient supplementation.

Consider adding BCAAs to regular meals when protein intake is low.

Does a low-protein diet prolong life when kidney function declines?

In fact, there is no clear data that a low-protein diet prevents the decline of kidney function in humans or animals. The idea that it is unnecessary to restrict protein so strictly even with kidney disease has recently gained attention.

Cats need to consume more protein than humans or dogs to maintain their health. Prolonged restriction of protein and continued high-calorie diets rich in carbohydrates and fats may actually shorten the lifespan of cats with kidney disease.

This is particularly true when making homemade diets that drastically reduce protein. Please be cautious.

Why protein is necessary

Protein is an essential component that makes up muscles and organs. Furthermore, a certain amount of protein in the body is broken down and excreted daily, so each cat has a minimum daily intake requirement.

Cats with a prolonged inadequate intake of protein will undoubtedly lose muscle mass. Even if they don’t lose weight, they have probably accumulated fat due to the decrease in muscle mass. Maintaining calories primarily with carbohydrates (sugars) and fats will increase body fat. An increased fat percentage raises the incidence of various lifestyle diseases. Naturally, life expectancy will also shorten.

The necessity of protein cannot be considered solely based on caloric nutrition. While calories can be supplemented with carbohydrates and fats, they cannot replace the vital roles of proteins in composing muscles, organs, and enzymes.

It’s not just about kidney disease in cats; in any treatment, make sure to gather information thoroughly and make comprehensive decisions without entrusting everything to others.

Our Wish: “Somehow Reduce Cancer”

We created “Pets too, Follow the Principle of ‘Food as Medicine'” in collaboration with veterinarians who value the nutrition of dogs and cats, in order to widely disseminate information on “Diet that Helps Prevent Cancer”. We made sure to compile it with ingredients that are as accessible as possible.

Cancer in dogs and cats is increasing year by year.

As with any disease, prevention is more effective with lifestyle changes than with medication. This is especially true for cancer. We suggest starting by re-evaluating the diet, which is considered closely related to cancer.

We base our approach on the idea that feeding a lot of carbohydrates can increase the “risk of cancer.”

Specifically, we believe that it is better to moderate foods like grains and potatoes and instead provide high-protein foods such as meat, fish, and beans.

This idea is summarized in “Food as Medicine for Pets.”

“Our shared wish is for dogs and cats to live longer and for their owners’ smiles to increase even more.” To achieve this wish, we cannot ignore the cancer that poses a threat to pets.

About the Basis of Our Content

Our idea of reducing carbohydrates is based on the fact that “the primary energy source for cancer is glucose.”

The way cancer cells use energy is very different from that of normal cells. Theoretically, cancer cells consume nearly 20 times more glucose than normal cells, using it as fuel for proliferation.

I don’t think there is any doctor or veterinarian involved in cancer treatment who doesn’t know that glucose is a primary energy source for cancer.

Recently, some of you may have undergone a PET-CT scan or a PET scan for cancer detection. Even if you haven’t, many of you are probably aware of such testing methods.
To explain PET scans simply:

1. Inject a glucose analog
2. The injected glucose travels through the bloodstream and circulates throughout the body
3. Cancer absorbs the glucose (glucose accumulates where cancer is present)
4. When an image is taken, the areas where glucose has accumulated light up

This mechanism allows for a full-body cancer scan in a single test.

The reason glucose accumulates where cancer is present is that cancer cells require much more glucose compared to healthy cells.

Today, nutritional deficiencies and caloric insufficiency are rarely an issue. The primary modern threat to pet health is cancer, which affects about half of all dogs and cats. Therefore, we should consider dietary balances that can help reduce cancer risk.

Pet foods that emulate the benefits of homemade diets have also started to appear. We are moving toward an era where the quality of a pet’s diet is more important than the quantity.

Reevaluation of dietary norms is already a step ahead in the human world. Recently, some doctors have begun actively promoting “dietary methods that overturn conventional wisdom,” which would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. Such opinions and recommendations are slowly gaining attention on television and in magazines, and more people are showing interest.

Protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids—these important elements that were often overlooked are now rightly being emphasized again.

Applying these principles to the animal field is still in its early stages. However, since veterinary medicine is bound to follow human medical advancements, there is no need to wait for that day to come. It’s perfectly fine to begin reevaluating your existing beliefs now.
